Four Ways to Find Balance Through Journalling

Emily Ley Journal Photo for Blog Post

Between family, friends and work, there is constant pressure to remain connected. We understand what it is like to want to do it all and do it all perfectly. That demands a lot from us, leaving little time for personal reflection.

It is hard to imagine fitting anything else into our busy schedule, but studies have shown that journalling for only 20 minutes a day can improve overall well-being.

Here is a list of four ways journalling can help you achieve a balanced lifestyle with a #smittenfave, the Emily Ley Simplified Journal:

  1. Bring clarity to your thoughts

Seeing your feelings on paper will help to give perspective on what lies ahead. Start by breaking down larger thoughts into small, realistic tasks as a way to develop solutions that are right for you. Use the “How I’m Feeling Today” section in the Emily Ley Simplified Journal as a space to share and get a grasp on how you’re doing each today.

  1. Get to know yourself better

In writing, we evoke a state of mindfulness that helps us engage with the present. Use your journal as a tool to process your current state of mind. The “What Went Well Today” and “What was Challenging Today” sections will help you discover your strengths and learn where you can improve.

  1. Journalling reduces stress

Turn to your journal as an emotional release in troubling situations. The cover of Emily Ley’s Journal reads, “I will hold myself to a standard of grace not perfection.” This simple phrase puts you in the proper head space to write freely. It is also a sweet reminder to be kinder to yourself, when life does not go according to plan.

  1. Explore your creativity and realize success

A journal is the perfect outlet for creativity and building new ideas. The “Brain Dump” section in the Simplified Journal has no boundaries. So, dream big and write from the heart.

Prepare to be smitten with your newly balanced lifestyle. To order your Emily Ley Simplified Journal, contact sapna@smittencreative.com.

“Growing up in a fairly health-conscious household, dessert was usually saved for special occasions. But, if my dad and I have one thing in common, it’s that we both share a bit of a sweet tooth. Every Monday night my mom worked late, leaving my dad and me in charge of dinner.

After the vegetables were eaten and the dishes were done, I would pull out two matching bowls and two matching spoons. At my cue, my dad would reach into the freezer for our secret stash of ice cream. We would scoop out every last drop from our bowls with just enough time to hide the incriminating evidence. It was a Monday night tradition that lasted for years!” –Anna

“Food equalled happiness in the home where I grew up. Some of my favourite memories are of spending time with my dad in our kitchen while he cooked, and I ate. You could find him in our kitchen on Sundays singing Opera while he was making tomato sauce, or pizza, and we were lucky enough to have homemade prosciutto, cured olives and an abundance of pickled vegetables most weekends, years before charcuterie platters became popular restaurant fare.

He also had a green thumb and spent as much time as he could tending to his garden. It was his favourite place in the world, and I would often find him asleep there after a long, sunny day. He gave my sister and I an appreciation for how much work and dedication it takes to make things grow, but the best part was seeing how happy he was to share all of it with us.” –Isabel

“For as long as I can remember, my dad has been an executive member of a basketball league called FILACT. When I was little, he would bring me to the gym with him where I would run up and down the sidelines, cheering him on as he played. He used to joke that he was the only one that had his own personal cheerleader and coach.

I continued to accompany him every Saturday for many years after. These Saturdays spent in the basketball gym are some of my favourite memories with my dad.  It made him so happy to be able to bring me into that part of his life. As I got older, seeing him in his ‘natural habitat’ taught me that he was more than just my dad—he was also a regular guy who loves playing basketball and joking around with his friends.” –Carmella

dad dog

“One of the greatest lessons my dad has taught me is that if you want something badly enough, you just need to make it happen. One moment that serves as the perfect example for this is from Father’s Day 2010. We had recently lost our family dog and understandably my dad was heart-broken–he truly was man’s best friend. Discussions were on-going about getting a new dog and when my dad realized that a puppy was not part of his Father’s Day gift, he decided to take matters into his own hands.

Little did we know that my dad had already been speaking with breeders and the next day I received a call that the newest member to the Zuzinjak family had arrived. Although it was a surprise to us all (especially my mom), now we can’t imagine life without Jack, the feisty jug. I love my dad for his passion, determination and teaching us to go after what we want–either it be an opportunity, an adventure or a new furry friend.” –Susan

“This Father’s Day I want to celebrate an amazing man and favourite “dad”, my wonderful husband.  I can’t tell you how much it warms my heart to witness him creating memories with our daughter.  When Naaya is with her father, she goes to this remarkable happy place—watching them together is reminiscent of a Disney fairy tale. They say you are only as old as your children, which Naaya has proven by turning Damian into a hero, a prince and her favourite playmate all at the same time.

No small task is inconvenient or too feminine for Damian to manage.  He always enjoys his daily interactions with his little girl. Whether making her pony tail in the morning, changing her diaper in the men’s room or brushing their teeth together—it is always done with so much love.  Damian is a devoted and dedicated father.  He understands that real magic happens while doing the simple things in life!” -Sapna

Summer Travel Tips

Wherever you may find yourself heading for your next adventure, there are always favourite items you just can’t leave home without. Check out what smitten’s team will be wearing and packing this summer when they head out for a little summer fun!

Susan’s Travel Picks:

Favourite Travel Outfit:

The perfect travel outfit is simple:

  1. Dress in layers, using items that can serve a dual-purpose (e.g. your scarf can serve as a pillow for long flights)
  2. Wear flats and if they are easily removable, even better
  3. Sunglasses (just in case you don’t look camera ready when getting off your flight)
  4. Comfort is a MUST!

Go-to Travel Accessory:
Polarized sunglasses that look chic and help protect sensitive eyes.

Travel Must-Have:
As important as the items you pack, the luggage you use to carry it all in is essential. Choosing luggage that is lightweight, durable and features four dual-sided wheels that give you 360-degree movement is my must-have for anyone on-the-go!

Carmella’s Travel Picks:

Favourite Travel Outfit:

A travel outfit should be three things: cute, casual, and (most importantly) comfortable! Look for something you can lounge around the airport in that is also ready to wear as soon as you get off the plane. Maxi skirts are perfect for travelling and are easy to dress up or down! Try jet-setting in a printed maxi skirt, paired with a simple white tee, and a cute pair of flats.

Go-to Travel Accessory:

A pretty passport cover like this striped one from J Crew allows you to find your passport quickly in your purse.

Travel Must-Have:

There’s nothing more frustrating than opening up your luggage to find your necklaces entangled into a giant knot. Keep everything organized in a fun jewelry travel case so you can spend more time on the beach and less time fiddling all of your jewelry!

Isabel’s Travel Picks:

Favourite Travel Outfit:
A travel outfit should be versatile. To get the most out of your outfit, wear pieces that you can mix and match with other items in your travel wardrobe.
Go-to Travel Accessory:
Comfortable shoes that are vacation ready, like these French Tip TKEES flip flops!

Travel Must-Have:
Flip and Tumble’s 24-7 bag takes up very little space in your suitcase, and is great to take from the beach to a local market. It’s compact, durable (can hold up to 35 lbs.) and has felt patch on the inside of the strap to keep the bag in place. Bonus: It’s machine washable!

Anna’s Travel Picks:

Favourite Travel Outfit:
The perfect travel outfit should be comfortable and polished. A loose-fitting, cotton shirt works because after hours of sitting, the wrinkles aren’t too noticeable. Travel shoes must follow two rules. 1. No laces – so that they can be taken off and thrown on at security, and 2. Flats – in case you have to run through the airport to make a connection!

Go-to Travel Accessory:
An oversized scarf is perfect for chilly nights after a long day in the sun. Tip: put it in your carry on – planes are always colder than you expect them to be!

Travel Must-Have:
A bigger cross-body bag to carry essentials like your wallet, camera, a map and anything else you need without weighing you down.

Sapna’s Travel Picks:

Sapna's favourite travel outfit, accessory, & must-have

Favourite Travel Outfit:
Travel in style with an all-white outfit featuring comfortable capris and a cute tank top. Pair with your favourite pair of espadrilles and a big colourful bag to become instantly vacation ready!

Go-to Travel Accessory:
A big sun hat in bright colours like turquoise are great for keeping you cool, and are perfect for lounging on the beach or roaming around a new city.

Travel Must-Have:
When travelling with “little ones”, sometimes practicality trumps luxury. Having that cure-all, handy first aid kit is a must-have! A safe journey = A happy journey!

Wishing you happy and safe travels!
